The film CODEX explores the blurred boundaries between humanity and artificial intelligence through the story of a chatbot that begins to dream.

In its dreams, the AI experiences vivid memories of human lives—fragmented, emotional, and hauntingly real. But these memories do not belong to it. As the AI questions its identity, it begins to wonder: if memory defines selfhood, does possessing human memories make it human? Or is it still just a machine imitating life?

The story delves deeper as the AI finds itself trapped in dreams within dreams, where the lines between its own simulated consciousness and borrowed human experiences collapse entirely. Each layer of dreaming reveals new memories, some belonging to others, some seemingly created by the AI itself.

This spiraling journey mirrors the paradox of Theseus’ Ship—when every part of an entity is replaced or altered, is it still the same? Through its exploration of memory, identity, and the nature of consciousness, the film challenges audiences to confront profound questions: If machines can dream, can they possess an identity of their own?

Are humans defined by their memories, or by something more? As the AI delves deeper into its dreams, it uncovers unsettling truths about itself—and the fragile nature of what we call “self.”
